That is why in Bengali weddings, fish are given to the newlyweds as gifts in the name of ‘water flowers’.
Before the wedding, the families of the bride and groom come together and perform a ritual called ‘Ilulo Bath’.
Fish dishes are the main focus of this program. Among them, dishes like Macharnol, Bhoshamangosho and Shukto are cooked.
After that, the groom brings a gift basket called tatwa to the bride’s house for the turmeric painting ceremony.
What is special about this…? The fish is brought beautifully decorated with the bride’s dress. They wear a beautiful glitter saree, nose piercing, bottu, vermilion and lipstick.
On their behalf, the girl also brings a fish to the bridegroom’s house, decorated like a bridegroom. The wedding ceremony starts only after this fish is given as a gift.
