Angry farmers at Lasalgaon Agricultural Produce Market Committee in Maharashtra have decided to stop onion auction. Recently, the price of onion in Lasalgaon APMC, which is the largest onion market in Asia, is Rs 2 to 4 per kg.

The representative of the onion farmers said that the government should immediately release the compensation of Rs.1500 per quintal to the farmers and buy their onions at the rate of Rs.15 to 20 per kg.

If they do not do that, they will not allow the auction to continue in Lasalgaon HPMC. Asia’s largest onion market is located in Nashik district of Maharashtra.

The minimum onion price touched Rs 200 per quintal when the Lasalgaon market opened on Monday. At this time, the maximum price of onion was Rs.800 per quintal, while the average price was Rs.400 to 450 per quintal. Onion farmers demanded to pay compensation of Rs.1500 per quintal

By Saturday, 2404 quintals of onions were sold to APMC. Then the minimum price of onion is Rs.351 per quintal. While the maximum price per quintal is Rs.1231. The average price of onion on Saturday was Rs.625 per quintal.

Bharat Dighole, the leader of the onion farmers of Maharashtra state, said that during the current Vidhan Sabha budget meetings, the government should immediately announce a compensation of Rs.1500 per quintal to the onion farmers and buy onion at Rs.3.

He asked to buy onion which is selling at Rs.15 to Rs.20 per quintal for 4 per quintal and provide relief to the farmers.
