Kamala Khan aka Ms Marvel is played by debutant Iman Vellani and she is Marvel’s first South-Asian female superhero. A teenager in high school, Kamala is an avid gamer with a prodigious imagination, and, like any other teenager, she has an idol: Captain Marvel. Her fandom takes on a remarkable twist when she finds herself with super powers, much like her hero. Set in New Jersey, the best part about Ms. Marvel is Kamala’s sheer joy in discovering her super powers.
The premiere of Ms. Marvel forges a voice of its own, thanks to Iman Vellani. There has probably not been as on-point a casting in MCU as Iman Vellani. Bringing a refreshing approach to superheroism, Vellani feels instantly comfortable as the anxious teenager, the actor plays into the character’s dorky traits without becoming a caricature. She does feel like she came to this universe straight from the comic book; there is always that twinkle in her eyes that we associate with the superhero. The depiction of Pakistani and South Asian culture and values has also been well documented alongside the young protagonist who navigates her powers in a brilliant portrayal of the lived experience of culture. The visuals of the series are something to be admired with a seamless combination of punchyanimation and masterful live-action.
Upping the diversity, popular stars like Indian filmmaker-actor Farhan Akhtar and Pakistani superstar Fawad Khan will also be seen making an appearance in Ms Marvel in the upcoming episodes alongside Mohan Kapur, Sagar Shaikh and Nimra Bucha. Not only the actors, but the team also brought South Asian representation behind the show with the British-Pakistani creator of the series Bisha K Ali. Directed by Adil El Arbi, Bilall Fallah, Meera Mohan and two-time Academy Award® winner Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy, Ms Marvel looks promising and it’ll be interesting to see Kamala’s story unfold in the upcoming episodes.
