The Commission felt that there was a need for a system to mediate the issues raised by the press to engage with the public.The Press Council of India (PCI) was formed on 16 November 1966.
India’s National Press Day has been celebrated on 16th November every year since then to commemorate the formation of the association.The Press Council of India is chaired by a retired Supreme Court judge.
Of the 28 additional members, 20 are members of media organizations operating in India. Five members will be nominated from the category of MPs of Parliament.It will be given to three members from the fields of culture, law and literature.
