What vaccines are given to children to protect them from serious and life-threatening diseases?

Measles vaccine

Measles disease in children is also known as measles. The risk of death due to this disease is high. Children are given two doses of the MMR vaccine to protect against this disease. This vaccine helps protect against life-threatening diseases like measles, mumps and rubella. In this regard the first vaccine should be given between 12-15 months and the second between 4-6 years. All children must get this vaccine.

Hepatitis B vaccine

Hepatitis “B” is a life-threatening infection caused by the hepatitis “B” virus (HBV). This can lead to serious liver diseases if it gets infected. According to World Health Organization recommendations, children should be vaccinated after birth. The second-third dose of hepatitis “B” vaccine is given at least 4 weeks apart. This vaccine helps reduce the lifetime risk of death from hepatitis “B” infection.

Oral polio vaccine

Poliomyelitis is a disease that causes disability in children. India has conquered this disease as a result of massive vaccination campaign. Oral polio vaccine (OPV) is given to prevent polio. This two-dose vaccine for children under five years of age helps protect them from the risk of serious illness.

Rotavirus vaccine

Rotavirus is the cause of severe diarrhea in infants and young children worldwide. Rotavirus vaccine protects against rotavirus infection. It is also beneficial in reducing the risk of serious disease in the future. This vaccine is given to babies at 6, 10, 14 weeks. The infection is largely under control in India due to increased awareness about vaccination.
